Antimicrobial Peptides

AnaSpec recently introduced a new selection of antimicrobial peptides as part of its GO Peptides collection. hCAP18, human cationic antimicrobial protein, with a MW of 18 kD, is the only cathelicidin gene found in humans. The N-terminus of this protein consists of a cathelin-like region (highly conserved among species) and a C-terminal termed LL-37.

Cell Invasion Assay

Recently, work was conducted at Trevigen on the factors affecting basement membrane extract (BME) dependent cell invasion assays. It was shown that the level of invasion depends on both the cell type and the concentration of the BME used in the assay. Combining this finding with the advantages of offering the assay in a format where the BME is already coated on the invasion plate, the new 96 well CultreCoat optimized BME cell invasion assay was designed.

Cytotoxicity Assay

The CytoScan-fluoro from G-Biosciences is based on the quantification of cellular lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) when cells are damaged. Lactate dehydrogenase is released into the culture medium and then measured with a diaphorase coupled enzymatic assay. This results in the conversion of a non-fluorescent compound (resazurin) to a fluorescent compound (resorufin) that can be measured using a fluorometer.

Plasminogen Activator Assay Kits

AnaSpec introduced two plasminogen activator assay kits—the SensoLyte AFC Urokinase (uPA) Assay Kit and the SensoLyte AMC tPA Assay Kit. These kits, optimized for inhibitor screening, contain high-performance fluorogenic substrates which exhibit high reactivity and low background signal.

Homogeneous Assay Kits

AMSBIO has released four new homogeneous 384-well format AlphaScreen assay kits—JMJD2A, JMJD2B, JMJD2C, PRMT5, and G9a (a histone methyltransferase).

Kits for Assessing Oxidative Stress

AMSBIO has announced an expanded range of assay kits for the detection and quantification of oxidative stress biomarkers and antioxidants.

GSH Assay Kits

AnaSpec has introduced two new Glutathione (GSH) related kits—the SensoLyte Glutathione Cellular Assay Kit and the SensoLyte GST Activity Assay Kit—to complement the colorimetric and fluorimetric SensoLyte Total GSH assay kits.

T-Cell Proliferation Assays

ProImmune has launched DC T Cell Proliferation Assays based on its CFSE detection platform to assess the immunogenicity of whole proteins. This assay measures if candidate proteins induce helper CD4+ T cell proliferation that may lead to anti-drug antibody responses or other unwanted immunogenicity.

RBC Lysis Buffer

G-Biosciences’ RBC Lysis Buffer is designed for the optimal lysis of erythrocytes, while having minimal effect of lymphocytes, when used as directed. RBC Lysis Buffer is ideal for the isolation of white blood cells that are free from red blood cells.

Beta-Amyloid Custom Peptides

AnaSpec has introduced its ClearPoint β-Amyloid custom peptide synthesis service. ClearPoint peptides are AnaSpec’s collection of heavy or stable isotope labeled peptides and amino acids.

Step up to the MIQE

Mar 30

Over the years, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) has evolved into a readily automated, high throughput quantitative technology. Real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) has become the industry standard for the detection and quantification of nucleic acids for multiple application, including quantification of RNA levels. But a lack of consensus among researchers on how to best perform and interpret qPCR experiments presents a major hurdle for advancement of the technology. This problem is exacerbated by insufficient experimental detail in published work, which impedes the ability of others to accurately evaluate or replicate reported results.

The year 2009 was marked by the emergence of a novel influenza A (H1N1) virus that infects humans. There is a need to identify the different strains of influenza virus for purposes of monitoring the H1N1 strain pandemic and for other epidemiological and scientific purposes.

Advantages of Monolithic Laser Combiner Technology in Confocal Microscopy Systems

Jan 6

Fluorescence microscopy techniques require a reliable light source at the desired wavelength or wavelengths, with minimal downtime for maintenance and alignment. Lasers are a popular light source, although the alignment and upkeep of laser combiners is a time-consuming prospect for many users.

Size-Exclusion Chromatography for Purification of Biomolecules

Dec 2 2009

Size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) is a popular method to separate biomolecules based on their size. Primarily, it is applied to the separation of biopolymers such as proteins and nucleic acids, i.e. water-soluble polymers.

Ensuring Quality in Assays Performed with Automated Liquid Handlers

Feb 2

The focus of this presentation is to highlight the need of ensuring quality in important assays performed with automated liquid handlers. Nearly all assays performed within a laboratory are volume-dependent. In turn, all concentrations of biological and chemical components in these assays, as well as the associated dilution protocols, are volume-dependent. Because analyte concentration is volume-dependent, an assay’s results might be falsely interpreted if liquid handler variability and inaccuracies are unknown or if the system(s) go unchecked for a long period.

Inkjet System for Protein Crystallography

Feb 1

X-ray crystallography is used routinely by scientists to obtain the three dimensional structure of a biological molecule of interest.Such information can be used to determine how a pharmaceutical interacts with a protein target and what changes might improve functionality. However, the crystallization of macromolecules still remains a serious hindrance in structural determination despite impressive advances in screening methods and technologies.

Attention Deficit & Hyperactivity in a Drosophila Memory Mutant

Attention Deficit & Hyperactivity in a Drosophila Memory Mutant

Nov 9 2009

Action selection is modulated by external stimuli either directly or via memory retrieval. In a constantly changing environment, animals have evolved attention-like processes to effectively filter the incoming sensory stream. These attention-like processes, in turn, are modulated by memory. The neurobiological nature of how attention, action selection and memory are inter-connected is unknown. We describe here new phenotypes of the memory mutant radish in the fruit fly Drosophila.

Stress-induced priming of glutamate synapses unmasks associative short-term plasticity.

Exposure to a stressor sensitizes or 'primes' the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis to a subsequent novel stressor. The synaptic mechanisms underlying this priming, however, are not known. We found that exposing a rat to a single stressor primed glutamate...
