Microsample Spectrophotometer
Biochemicals/Instruments/Labware Apparatus
The Thermo Scientific NanoDrop 8000 Spectrophotometer is the latest in a series of microvolume NanoDrop instruments capable of measuring 1µl samples without the use of traditional containment devices such as cuvettes or capillaries. The system combines fiber optic technology and inherent surface tension of liquid samples to measure up to eight 1µl samples within 15 seconds. This microsample spectrophotometer provides an absorbance spectrum, calculated concentrations, and purity ratios for common biological samples. Using a multi-channel pipettor, the user draws 1µl samples from the appropriate wells with the aid of the Sample Position Illuminator (SPI), which keeps track of the selected samples by lighting up the corresponding wells from beneath a 96-well plate. This feature helps the user readily identify the correct wells to draw from for each measurement, increasing efficiency while reducing error. The samples are then pipetted directly onto an array of optical pedestals. The upper array of pedestals automatically engages the samples, forming liquid columns to establish measurement path lengths.
