Colony Picking, Arraying Instrument
VersArray colony picker and arrayer systems are robotic platforms that generate and replicate high density colony arrays for synthetic genetic array (SGA) analysis. SGAs are being used to improve functional genomic approaches for identifying whole genome interaction networks. Colony arraying/gridding and replicating of high-density colony arrays can be performed quickly and efficiently. Two versions are offered, one for arraying and one for picking and arraying. Both versions can be expanded with a liquid transfer module for added functionality. The instrument forms an ordered matrix of colonies on a gel plate that can then be screened for the impact of virtually any genetic or chemical interaction. The robot completes an arraying cycle (excluding wash) in 60 seconds and, using a 768-pin replicator head, arrays more than 23,000 colonies per hour with a one-minute wash step. This SGA methodology can be applied to array-based functional genomic or proteomic analysis, including mutation analysis and east two-hybrid screening. When configured with a colony picker, the robot can identify and pick white or blue colonies from a 22 × 22 cm plate. More than 9200 colonies can be picked during one run at a rate of 850 colonies per hour. It uses a sophisticated image acquisition system to prioritize, pick and inoculate colonies during unattended runs. A CCD camera with special lenses and illumination system is included. Once image collection is complete, colonies are picked from culture trays by a high-speed picking head and then inoculated into pre-filled 96- or 384-well plates.
