Invitrogen Opens Cloning Architecture

Invitrogen Corp. recently announced a new policy related to its Gateway technology, under which researchers who purchase the system will be able to create and freely distribute clones within the scientific community. Gateway provides a method for cloning DNA sequences and moving these sequences into multiple systems for studying genes and proteins. Since different proteins require different cellular host systems for expression, the technology makes moving a gene from one of these hosts to another easy and consistent. Users first create an entry clone, which takes the gene of interest into Gateway, from which point any number of expression clones can be created for every required host system. The new policy allows researchers to create and freely distribute entry clones to any entity without limiting royalties or licensing fees. The new policy also allows for free distribution of Gateway expression clones by government and academic researchers. Commercial organizations may distribute Gateway expression clones for ten dollars per clone.
