Competent Cells

ATCC has introduced E. coli competent cells and SOC Medium for researchers who utilize transformation in the study of gene expression, cloning, and other applications. GC5 and GC10 cells consistently show transformation efficiencies of >109, and are are resistant to lytic phages T1 and T5. These cells are appropriate for most cloning applications, carrying mutations that minimize recombination and enhance plasmid quality. Transformants can be detected by blue/white screening. The cells are ready to use, and chemical manipulation is not needed to render the cells competent. Other features of the cells make them ideal for specialized transformation studies. GC10 cells inhibit host cell restriction digest of eukaryotic DNA. JM109 cells allow single-stranded cloning and lac promoter control. The cells are packaged in 5 × 200 μl quantities. One vial of pUC19 control DNA is included. SOC Medium is a rich medium used in E. coli competent cell transformations to maximize efficiency. It is packaged in 10 × 10 ml quantities, ready to use.
