ESA Systems Expand Mass Spectrometer Molecular Detection Capability

ESA Inc., has utilized its electrochemical (EC) systems in conjunction with a Mass Spectrometer (MS) to expand the number and types of molecules for analysis. The Coulochem, CoulArray or new DiscovArray systems are easily integrated into virtually any mass spectrometer or LCMS system and can be used to oxidize/ionize many different types of compounds. Typical ionization sources (electrospray, APCI, or even APPI) are often not enough to ionize difficult compounds. This necessitates a lengthy and risky derivatization project. Further, mass spectrometers, being used as an ultimate detector for a sample, may be unable to analyze every component of a sample containing multiple compounds. To address these issues, the systems utilize very simple oxidation reactions to ionize, or otherwise oxidize, compounds to make them amenable to MS analysis.
