Human Genome Sciences Inc. said Monday it plans to ask for regulatory approval of the experimental lupus drug Benlysta during the second quarter.
The drug candidate is aimed at suppressing the immune system's response to lupus, an inflammatory disease prompting the body to attack its own tissue and organs. If approved, it could be the first new treatment for lupus on the market in decades.
GlaxoSmithKline is the company's partner on Benlysta.
Human Genome Sciences also said it expects at least $150 million in revenue in 2010, excluding potential milestone payments for approval of the hepatitis C treatment Zalbin. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters expect revenue of about $181.6 million.
Human Genome Sciences filed for FDA approval of Zalbin in the fourth quarter. The company's shares fell 55 cents to $30.27 in midday trading.
