WHITEHOUSE STATION, N.J. (AP) — Drugmaker Merck & Co. Inc. on Monday said it hired Julie Gerberding, former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as the new president of its vaccines business.
Gerberding will lead the Merck Vaccines business starting Jan. 25. She was director of the CDC from 2002 until January 2009. The CDC is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
In afternoon trading, Merck shares rose 86 cents, or 2.3 percent, to $38.27, after earlier setting a 52-week high of $38.42.
